In Mylo Freeman's picturebooks the main characters are usually from a different ethnic background. You may wonder why...

A few years ago someone told Mylo a story about a little surinam girl named Jahkini. Jahkini was offered a role in a schoolplay to play the part of princess, but she refused.
'There's no such thing as a black princess, there's no way I can play that part!', she answered. After Mylo heard that story, she decided to do something about it. She created a picturebook about a little strongwilled princess with beautiful brown skin called Arabella.

In the meantime 4 books have appeared about princess Arabella and even a musical theaterplay written by Marielle van Sauers.

There is more than enough room for characters with a different ethnic background in picturebooks. It will teach all children to accept and understand each other even more!
